The E-21: First Generation 3 Series BMW
BMW released its E21 in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis. In the process they managed to attract customers seeking both prestige and economy, and win numerous automotive world awards and honors. It would nearly double BMW’s worldwide sales figures in three years. Three decades later, the 3 Series is still the best-selling of its class. It is as commonplace in Asia, America and Australia as it is in Europe. While some argue that the popularity of the car has reduced its “prestigious” image, the 3 Series remains a superb automotive benchmark, and its competitors are often judged by how close they come to duplicating the feel and incredible drivability of this particular car. The 3 series has also helped maintain BMW’s racing heritage. The M version of the 3 series, the M3, debuted in the US in 1988, and was met with acclaim from the entire automotive community.
